ABILENE, TX - The McMurry War Hawks delivered a spectacular 65-7 Homecoming performance against Lyon College, showcasing a powerful offensive attack that amassed 649 yards of total offense and earned the team 28 first downs.
The War Hawks were unstoppable on offense, particularly in the passing game, which accumulated 506 net yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Dylan Plake was highly efficient, completing 20 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns, while Glenn Rice added 120 yards and one touchdown through the air.
The receiving corps put on a clinic. Omari Johnson led the team with 107 yards and a touchdown on five catches. Karmelus Card caught five passes for 74 yards and a touchdown, and Marcus Maple broke free for a huge 57-yard scoring strike, totaling 67 yards and a touchdown. Rhett Butler also found the end zone on a 22-yard pass. Thomas Chandler was a threat downfield, hauling in two passes for 71 yards, including a 58-yard bomb.
The ground game was equally impressive, piling up 143 rushing yards and five touchdowns. The scoring began early with Corey Layne's 9-yard rushing touchdown and continued with Tedrick Williams finding the end zone. Quarterback Glenn Rice added a 9-yard rushing touchdown, and James Garza punched in a 2-yard score. Thomas Chandler also ran in a 14-yard score, and Nyles Hullaby added a 4-yard touchdown.
Defensively, the War Hawks were dominant, holding the opposition to just 141 total offensive yards and only 18 net rushing yards. The defense limited Lyon's passing attack, and safety Xavier Rodriguez secured an interception to stop a drive. The defensive front registered three total sacks for 30 lost yards, with Jackson Harris (sack, one tackle for loss) and Eric Tonche (sack, one tackle for loss) leading the pressure. Trevor Bolden also contributed a key sack.
The special teams unit added to the overwhelming score when Jackson Stroud blocked a punt, resulting in a defensive safety. Kicker Jax Rodriguez was perfect on the day, converting all nine of his PAT attempts.
The War Hawks head to Sherman, Texas, next Saturday at 1:00 p.m. to continue SCAC play against Austin College at Jerry Apple Stadium.
