Box Score ABILENE- The first game of a men's and women's double-header between McMurry & UT-Dallas consisted of the women's squads in a close battle at Kimbrell Arena. The first quarter saw a lot of back and forth action between the two teams. Loose balls were hard to come by, as can be expected when two teams that pride themselves on toughness match up against one another. Baskets on the offensive end would continue to be hard to get as the Comets led after the opening quarter by a score of 12-8.
The physicality and intensity would continue to grow throughout the second half, but UT-Dallas saw their lead grow to 10 points before McMurry got a pair of free throws from
Emily Holland, followed by a cut-through layup by
Kylie Flippin to spark a 2
nd quarter push for the War Hawks. Both teams would continue the trend of going back and forth, keeping the game close down the stretch of the second quarter. UT-Dallas led at the half by a score of 23-19. Both teams received their fair share of even contributions throughout their rotations, as
Kylie Flippin led the War Hawks with 7 points, while Alex Bowman led the Comets with 6 after the first half of play.
McMurry needed to come out and set the tone early in the second half, they got 2 big baskets from
Aryana Cleveland but struggled to get stops on the defensive end early in the 3
rd quarter. The flow of the game continued in the same way that we saw in the first half, with lots of physicality and tough basketball from both teams. Shooting struggles continued for the War Hawks for the first few minutes of the third quarter, but a corner 3 at the midway point from
Emily Holland seemed to wake up McMurry's shooting ability. The teams closed out the 3
rd quarter scoring at a higher level. McMurry got a big 3 point play from
Kylie Flippin to finish the quarter, cutting the deficit to 46-41 going into a crucial 4
th quarter of play.
The War Hawks carried over their intensity from the end of the 3
rd quarter as they went on a run of their own to take their first lead at 50-49 at the 6:51 mark. McMurry continued to use transition run-out's to create scoring opportunities, forcing a UT-Dallas timeout after an 11-0 run by the War Hawks. McMurry led 54-49 at the 5:43 point of the 4
th quarter. The Comets got a couple of big baskets to cut the lead back to 2 before McMurry got 2 big free-throws from Helena Chadwick to double the War Hawks lead. Down the stretch, UT-Dallas was able to get enough contributions to conquer the deficit and close out the game. The War Hawks shot the ball better in the second half, but turnovers and late fouls proved to be costly in the games final moments. UT-Dallas would win the contest, 64-60. McMurry was led by
Kylie Flippin with 13, while UT-Dallas was led by Ellery Sample with 15 points.
The War Hawks are back in action on Friday in San Antonio as they take on Trinity at 5:30PM.
