Box Score 3 McMurry University baseball lost a series to East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, falling 10-2, 15-5 and 7-5.
In the game Thursday, March 28, coach Josh Lee's team scored twice in the third inning. Junior infielder Ty Nelson (Scottsdale, Arizona) reached first base on an error by the first baseman, scoring both junior outfielder Xavier Escobar (Buda, Texas) and junior infielder Blake Beach (Atascocita, Texas). Junior outfielder Casey Turner (Kingwood, Texas) got both of McMurry's hits. Escobar stole a base.
Freshman lefty Braydon Durst (Fredericksburg, Texas), who threw four innings and struck out three batters, was given the loss. Assisting were sophomore righty Will Cooper (Del Rio, Texas), who threw a portion of an inning and struck out one, and senior righty Dylan Schafer (Cibolo, Texas), who threw 3.1 innings and struck out two.
In the first game Friday, March 29, McMurry scored one run in the fourth, and two runs each in the sixth and seventh. Sophomore catcher Michael Smosna (Lubbock, Texas) singled down the right field line in the fourth for a RBI, allowing Nelson to go home. In the sixth, sophomore infielder Riley Hood (Abilene, Texas) homered for a 2 RBI which also enabled Nelson to score. The visitors then launched back-to-back bombs in the seventh, each coming from Escobar and junior outfielder Koy Carpenter (La Vernia, Texas). McMurry collected eight hits with contributions from Carpenter, Nelson, Hood (2), Smosna (2), Beach and Escobar. Smosna stole two bases and Nelson and Beach had one apiece.
Freshman righty Ethan Wendel (Louise, Texas), who threw two innings and struck out three, was given the loss. Assisting was sophomore lefty Trey Gomez (Abilene, Texas), who threw 3.1 innings and struck out two.
In Friday's second game, McMurry scored once in the sixth, and four times in the seventh. Junior infielder Nolan Scherencel (Arlington, Texas) advanced to third on a wild pitch in the sixth and Hood scored on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Nelson grounded out to second base for a RBI, sophomore outfielder Tatum Black (Friendswood, Texas) went to third base and Escobar crossed home plate. Black then scored on a passed ball. Also in the seventh, Smosna homered for a 2 RBI, which also sent Hood home. McMurry got six hits with contributions from Black, Hood, Smosna, Scherencel, Beach and Escobar. Smosna, Beach and Escobar each stole a base.
Sophomore righty Hunter Poe (Midland, Texas), who threw five innings and struck out five, was given the loss. Assisting was junior righty Bryson Morrill (Trophy Club, Texas), who threw two innings and struck out two.
McMurry, 12-13 overall and 7-8 in the American Southwest Conference, plays a non-conference game with University of Dallas at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Walt Driggers Field.
