MCMURRY TAKES UNBEATEN FOE TO WIRE

SEGUIN, TEXAS – A non-conference defensive battle left fans of McMurry University and Texas Lutheran University on the edge of their seats over 90 minutes Sunday, Sept. 24.

Head coach Marquis Muse's youthful crew bounced back well from a 6-0 defeat at the hands of NCAA Division III top-10 ranked University of St. Thomas Sept. 22. Squaring off with a second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference perennial standout, the visitors kept the scoreboard at TLU's Gustafson Field devoid of goals into the latter stages of the match.

Freshman goalkeeper Brandon Walker (Royse City, Texas) and the War Hawks' back line proved just as solid as their counterparts over 78 minutes and 43 seconds. At that moment, a foul in the box near McMurry's goal provided a penalty kick attempt which the home side converted for a 1-0 advantage. Muse's offense had three long passes go deep into the Bulldogs' end of the pitch but couldn't work through for the tying score.

The visitors pieced together three offensive strikes. Sophomore forward Armando Saldana (Wichita Falls, Texas), junior forward Herbie Martinez (League City, Texas) and sophomore forward Jordan Katende (Saginaw, Texas) all had a shot attempt.

The War Hawks (1-4-2) are back on their home Wilford Moore Stadium facility Saturday, Sept. 30. Crosstown American Southwest Conference rival Hardin-Simmons visits for a 7:30 p.m. start as part of the Abilene Derby.
