ABILENE, TEXAS – McMurry University senior pitcher
Jenna Lewis and Sul Ross State University freshman hurler Leanza Chambers had fans on the edges of their seats Thursday, April 6.
Lewis,a native of Hearne, Texas, ran her remarkable string of complete game outings to 11 with a hard-fought 1-0, 10-inning decision over Chambers. The two combined for 10 strikeouts in the game-one thriller at Edwards Field. Lewis managed to work past six Lobos hits, while Chambers was pitch-for-pitch with her due to a defense that turned two double plays to keep the Maroon and White's usually potent offense at bay.
Senior Bri Martinez (Yucaipa, Calif.) led the War Hawks at the dish, going three-for-three. Her final hit was the biggest, as it got past SRSU's diving left fielder and shortstop to plate junior outfielder
Mercedes Camacho (El Paso, Texas) with the deciding run in a 1-0 final. Freshman first baseman
Bre Barajas (Abilene, Texas) also tacked on two hits.
After slipping past their guests in game one, McMurry's offense poured it on in the nightcap. A 13-run, 13-hit blitzkrieg was topped by Martinez winding up a five-for-five afternoon/evening with five RBI, a double, and a triple. Freshman infielder
Trista Brown added a two-RBI outing in the second game for head coach
David McNally's squad.
All of those attributes allowed senior pitcher
Kinleigh Stotts (Covington, Texas) to win her second game of the week in the circle. Improving to 5-3 on the season, she didn't allow a free pass and was touched for just three hits.
McMurry, pushing its current win streak to four, moved to 18-6 overall and 10-4 in the league. The series against Sul Ross State concludes Friday, April 7, with a single game at noon.
NOTE – Martinez's five-RBI effort in game two tied her for the single-game school record with Rachel Riple (accomplished twice in 2018 and 2019) and
Kelsey Ahart (accomplished in 2021).
