FRENETIC FRIDAY FINISH – LATE COMEBACK BID ENDS SHORT

ABILENE, TEXAS – Undaunted by a 14-3 deficit with only two at-bats remaining at their home Walt Driggers Field Friday, April 14, McMurry University got the rally caps out.

A pair of RBI walks received by freshman first baseman Noah Hamel (Schertz, Texas) and sophomore outfielder Casey Turner (Kingwood, Texas) paired with a three-run double to left center field by sophomore pinch hitter Dylan Abbott (San Angelo, Texas) brought the War Hawks' home crowd to its feet in the eighth, cutting the margin to 14-8. After holding visiting LeTourneau University scoreless in the ninth, a one-out walk to sophomore outfielder Xavier Escobar (Buda, Texas) and a single by fellow sophomore outfielder Koy Carpenter (La Vernia, Texas) set up another potentially big inning.

A balk and wild pitch plated a run, and an RBI ground out off the bat of junior shortstop Blake Beach (Atascocita, Texas) lessened the gap to 14-10. However, that was as close as the home side would get as another ground-out closed out a combined 24-run, 27-hit thriller.

Head coach Josh Lee's squad was nearly able to overcome four Yellowjackets' extra-base hits, three of which left the yard, 12 walks, and an eight-run visiting outburst in the top of the seventh. Abbott's three RBIs; a three-for-five, two-runs-scored, two-RBI night from sophomore third baseman Riley Hood (Abilene, Texas); three hits in five at-bats by Carpenter; and a two-hit, three-run-scored effort from Escobar topped the Maroon and White offense.

The War Hawks look to rebound in a pivotal doubleheader with LeTourneau Saturday, April 15. Start time is 1 p.m.
