Box Score 2 ABILENE, TEXAS – While the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor left Seidel-Swagerty Center with a pair of American Southwest Conference dual victories, it was anything but easy Saturday, April 1.
Freshman Nicholas Villalovos (Hereford, Texas) was on the verge of a number two singles win for head coach
Chris Breaux's McMurry University War Hawks on their home courts. He captured set one versus the Crusaders' Nicolas Cusano 6-2 and then battled his foe to a tiebreaker scenario in the second set before falling 7-6. Cusano managed to side-step him with a 10-6 final tiebreaker triumph for the 2-1 sets decision.
That match would be a harbinger of what the women's clash was like around the grounds. Battling to claim their first loop victory, the Maroon and White pushed four singles finals three sets with a pair of instant classics at numbers five and six. Sophomore
McKenzie Carroll (Groesbeck, Texas) rallied past Emily Higgs 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 with a thrilling 14-10 tiebreaker deciding the match. Junior
Hannah DeFriend (Groesbeck, Texas) was locked in a virtually carbon copy finish against Trinity McEowen at number six. She won set one 6-3, dropped a 10-3 tiebreaker in the second set that wound up 7-6 for the visitors and then went back and forth in the decider before being held off 12-10. Junior
Bridgette Fly (Watauga, Texas) and freshman
Jenna Vincent (San Angelo, Texas) also took their opponents to deciding third sets at numbers two and three.
