BATS BOOST MCMURRY

RICHARDSON, TEXAS – A sophomore trio provided McMurry University with plenty of power in American Southwest Conference action on Sunday, March 5.

Outfielder Koy Carpenter (La Vernia, Texas) and infielders Riley Hood (Abilene, Texas) and Dylan Lee (Hutto, Texas) each turned in multiple-hit outings to lead a nine-run, 14-hit resume for head coach Josh Lee's War Hawks. Carpenter rapped three singles and scored twice, Hood bashed a double, drove in two, and scored once, and Lee launched a three-run home run as part of a two-for-four, two-runs scored afternoon at UTD's field. Another underclassman, freshman catcher Michael Smosna (Lubbock, Texas), tallied two hits to add to the parade.

With that behind them, the Maroon and White pitching staff got down to work against the Comets. Freshman starter Cooper Marshall (Boerne, Texas) turned in another quality outing, firing four innings plus with four strikeouts. After he departed the hill, the bullpen quintet of freshman Jerek Pena (Ira, Texas), sophomore Dalton Enberg (Llano, Texas), freshman Jackson Wininger (Plano, Texas), sophomore Grayson Winter (Buda, Texas) and freshman Dylan Schafer (Cibolo, Texas) clamped down giving up only four hits, working through three runs, and striking out four over the final five innings to seal a 9-7 victory.

McMurry (4-9 overall, 3-3 ASC) climbed into a three-way tie for fifth on the loop standings. The Maroon and White break from competition until Tuesday, March 14. Austin College of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference comes to Walt Driggers Field for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, beginning six in a row at home.
