ABILENE, TEXAS – A combined five-pitcher one-run, one-hit gem in game two coupled with 20 runs crossing the Walt Driggers Field home plate on 21 hits for McMurry University spotlighted a Tuesday, March 14, non-conference doubleheader.
Head coach
Josh Lee's War Hawks opened the set against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Austin College with a seven-run rally over the final four frames that led to a 7-4 decision. Sophomore outfielder
Koy Carpenter (La Vernia, Texas) and sophomore infielders
Xavier Escobar (Buda, Texas) and
Riley Hood (Abilene, Texas) provided the power source. Carpenter and Escobar each tallied two hits, with Carpenter and Hood driving in a pair of runs.
Those superlatives made a winner out of senior relief pitcher
Travis Beauchamp (Waco, Texas). He fired two innings at the visiting Roos with two strikeouts included.
Freshman
Bryson Morrill (Trophy Club, Texas), freshman
Trey Gomez (Abilene, Texas), sophomore
Grayson Winter (Buda, Texas), senior
Seth Parriette (Haslet, Texas), and freshman
Dylan Schafer (Cibolo, Texas) kept AC's offense at bay in the nightcap. They combined to allow only one hit and one run to be posted on the scoreboard for the visitors.
Meanwhile, McMurry's bats continued to flourish. Sophomore infielder
Nolan Scherencel (Arlington, Texas), freshman infielder
Noah Hamel (Cibolo, Texas), and Hood each garnered multiple-RBI efforts. Scherencel and Hamel were especially efficient, with two hits each.
The Maroon and White, winners of three in a row, improved to 6-9. Lee's squad continues a current seven-game home stand Friday and Saturday, March 17 and 18, welcoming Mary-Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action.
