BELTON, TEXAS – McMurry University head coach
David McNally continues to go back to one theme when he talks about his 2023 War Hawks.
"We have handled adversity well when it has come up," he noted after the Maroon and White rebounded from an 8-0, six-inning loss to the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor Friday, March 10, with an impressive response in the form of a 3-2 victory at Dee Dillon Field Saturday, March 11.
"I am super proud of this team," he added. "We went into the series knowing UMHB was one of the top teams in the conference. After a rough ending last night, some adjustments had to be made today; in that sense, it shows how we handle adversity. We have a close group that was motivated, scored immediately, and attacked the game head-on."
Sophomore infielder
Jade Dickens (Friendswood, Texas) drove in a run on a fielder's choice as part of a one-for-four, one-run scored outing. Junior outfielder
Mercedes Camacho (El Paso, Texas), freshman infielder
Bre Barajas (Abilene, Texas) and junior outfielder
Angelica Abila (Lubbock, Texas) also collected a hit apiece.
The three-run, four-hit effort was enough for senior
Jenna Lewis (Hearne, Texas) who notched a second win in as many days against the Crusaders on their home field, ensuring the program's first American Southwest Conference series triumph against UMHB. Improving to 7-1, Lewis stood in against the home team offense that doubled among seven safeties to register her eighth straight complete game with three strikeouts thrown in for good measure.
"She is great at holding her composure," McNally noted about Lewis. "When she is off a little, Jenna knows how to miss but still make the hitters chase. She did her job again today, and the rest of the team fought hard behind her."
McMurry (11-3, 5-1 ASC) breaks from action until Friday and Saturday, March 24 and 25, when they host the University of Ozarks at Edwards Field.
