Box Score 2 ABILENE, TEXAS – A home sweep Saturday, Feb. 25, was just what the doctor ordered for McMurry University.
Coming off a tough luck Friday, Feb. 24, in which East Texas Baptist University took the measure of the Maroon and White in men's and women's teams in action at Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center, head coach
Chris Breaux's squads answered back in the affirmative a day later. The women posted straight-set victories in each of the six singles matches. They dropped only six games in doubles play to overwhelm LeTourneau University 9-0, while the men won a gritty effort against a talented Yellow Jackets side 5-4.
The women, improving to 4-3 overall, were led by the upperclasswoman duo of junior
Hannah DeFriend (Groesbeck, Texas) and senior
Emily Nuttall (Keller, Texas). They each collected their combined ninth singles and doubles triumphs in dual competition. DeFriend was set back in only two singles games in a 6-2, 6-0 decision at number six and joined fellow Class of 2023 member
Hope Turner (Wills Point, Texas) to cruise 8-2 in number one doubles play. Nuttall side-stepped her foe 7-5, 6-1 in singles competition and was added with sophomore
McKenzie Carroll (Groesbeck, Texas) to tally an 8-5 win at number three doubles.
Breaux's men's side, casting aside a four-dual losing streak, needed every bit of two doubles points and three singles victories to hold off LETU 5-4. The freshman trio of Nicholas Villalovos (Hereford, Texas), freshman
Ty Edwards (Brackettville, Texas), and Eh Ruh Soe (Dumas, Texas) captured singles triumphs. In doubles, which was the turning point, McMurry overcame a loss at number one, as senior
Dylan Bryant (Ovalo, Texas) and Soe (8-0 – No. 2) and freshman Alfredo Avila (Hereford, Texas) and senior
Jason Cabe (Brownfield, Texas) (8-6 – No. 3) swing the outcome pendulum squarely on the War Hawks (3-4 overall).
McMurry is back on the road with a weekend in the Big D Friday and Saturday, March 3 and 4. The Maroon and White face UT-Dallas in league play Friday at 2 p.m. and then take on NCAA Division II Dallas Baptist University and NAIA Texas Wesleyan University Saturday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
