Box Score 2 ABILENE, TEXAS – The upperclasswoman duo of junior
Hannah DeFriend (Groesbeck, Texas) and senior
Emily Nuttall (Keller, Texas) continued their strong start to the spring 2023 slate Saturday, Feb. 11.
DeFriend battled past Texas A&M-Texarkana's Tatum Skiles with a 7-5 third-set tiebreaker winner after both players won identical 6-4 decisions over the first two sets. Nuttall was a double victor with a default outcome at number six singles and joined sophomore
McKenzie Carroll (Groesbeck, Texas) for a similar outing at three doubles.
Nuttall wrapped up the War Hawks' season-opening four-dual home set at Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center with a combined 6-0 singles and doubles mark. DeFriend was unbeaten in singles action (4-0).
Those individual highlights put head coach
Chris Breaux's squad on the brink of a 4-0 record. However, Texas A&M-Texarkana pieced together four straight-set wins at number one through singles to hold off the Maroon, Black, and White 5-4.
TAMU-Texarkana's men were 9-0 victors over the War Hawks. Senior
Jason Cabe (Brownfield, Texas) nearly stopped the shutout, taking his number three singles match to a tiebreaker.
McMurry's men and women are on the road for the first time this spring Saturday, Feb. 18. The two sides face NCAA Division II foe Lubbock Christian, and the women clash with NJCAA member Weatherford College at the Penny Gullo Tennis Center in Lubbock.
