KINGSLAND, TEXAS – McMurry University resumed its 2023 fall schedule, traveling to compete in The Legends Cup in Kingsland, Texas, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 2 and 3.
Â
Heading into the second day of competition after a tough Monday 18, head coach
Rode McElreath gathered his team to relax their nerves Tuesday. "I just pointed out it's a brand-new day and not to worry about yesterday's scores.," he reflected. The team responded, having a better day of competition. Freshmen
Karen Santos (Crane, Texas),
Gillian Thurmond (Rockwall, Texas),
Landree Gonzales (Sudan, Texas), and sophomore
Victoria Arizpe (Abilene, Texas) either maintained or lowered their first-round efforts.
Â
Santos finished the competition with a score of +25, which landed her in a tie for 36
th place. She was the War Hawks' top placer. Thurmond wound up with a total of +40, landing in 53rd place to highlight the team's best two.
Â
McMurry's four-stroke bounce back on day two lifted them past Centenary College, a future Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe, into 10
th place on a loaded team leaderboard. "We just have to do a better job of executing and avoiding the big numbers," McElreath stated.

The War Hawks conclude their fall campaign by competing in Abilene Christian University's tournament at Diamondback Golf Course on Oct. 23 and 24.
