TOUGH-LUCK SHOOTING DENIES WAR HAWKS

Box Score AUSTIN, TEXAS – The senior-sophomore inside and outside combination of Destiny Mathews and Emily Holland guided McMurry University to begin a three-day, two-game American Southwest Conference road trip Thursday, Jan. 12.

Mathews, a native of Palestine, Texas, who recently joined the War Hawks' all-time top 10 in career points, added to that total with 18 that helped highlight an evening when she was only two boards short of a double-double. A nine-for-nine outing at the free throw line paced her efforts. Holland, hailing from Mansfield, Texas, contributed 15 points and four rebounds while hitting 50 percent from the field. Head coach Drew Long's squad also received a 12-point, three-rebound performance from freshman guard Helana Chadwick (La Vernia, Texas) at Concordia University's Fieldhouse.

Unfortunately, all of that couldn't catch up with the host Tornados. CU reversed a white-hot first quarter by their guests that saw the Maroon, White, and Black post 11 of the first 13 points by going on a 67-37 run of their own over the final three frames to lock up a 79-56 victory. McMurry's sizzling shooting start turned ice cold in the second quarter, as they hit just one of 12 attempts and were limited to eight points on the scoreboard, helping kickstart the home side's roll.

"It was another difficult shooting night after a good start," Long noted. "We came out with much energy and played well in the first quarter. From there, some good looks wouldn't fall, missing some lay-up opportunities, and Concordia kept chipping away to build the lead.

Our rebounding struggled for a second straight road game, too," he added. "The team needs to get back to where we were early in the season and start trusting each other to handle their roles on the floor."

Seeing a current stretch of defeats go to four, McMurry fell to 8-6 overall and 2-6 in league play. They wrap up their recent trip with a 1 p.m. tip-off at the University of Mary-Hardin-Baylor's Mayborn Campus Center in Belton, Texas, Saturday, Jan. 14.
