ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Men's Tennis battled tight with American Southwest Conference rival Mary Hardin-Baylor on Saturday, as the Cru snuck away a 5-4 victory at the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center in Abilene.
The War Hawks (4-12, 1-2 ASC) lost a bit of momentum after a tough loss in No. 3 doubles, allowing UMHB to evenly split singles and inch away with a one point win. The Cru improved to 7-10 overall and remain undefeated in conference play at 3-0.
After falling in No. 2 doubles, McMurry's top flight duo of Chase Daniell and Reid Smith evened things up with an 8-3 win over Cody Aaron and Alejandro Omana. The deciding doubles point came down to the wire, as Jason Cabe and Ty Edwards came up one point short in an 8-7 loss.
Daniell dominated No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory, but UMHB got one back when Omana defeated Smith in a 7-6, 6-3 battle. Connor Hogan leveled the match in Flight 3, defeating Aaron 6-2, 6-3.
With the match tied 3-3, UMHB went on to clinch with wins at No. 4 and No. 6 singles. The War Hawks got one back with a consolation win by Cabe over Diego Martinez, 6-3, 6-3.
Dyess Trophy points will be on the line in McMurry's next match, as the team welcomes cross town rival Hardin-Simmons to the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center on Friday, April 15.
