Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

War Hawks avenge Ozarks for second straight win, 59-52

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – After suffering a close loss to University of the Ozarks at home earlier this season, McMurry Women's Basketball got their revenge on the road in another close game by taking down the Eagles 59-52 in Clarksville, Ark. on Tuesday.

The win is McMurry's second in a row, snapping a season-long drought with back-to-back victories. Tonight marks McMurry's first road win and first American Southwest Conference win of the season.

The War Hawks (2-17, 1-12 ASC) were led in scoring by freshman sharpshooter Emily Holland for the second straight game, finishing with a game-high 22 points. Holland shot 6-12 from the field with two triples, while also going 8-11 at the line.

The game included seven lead changes, most of which came in the first quarter. The Ozarks (7-11, 4-9 ASC) took a 22-15 lead early in the second quarter, but McMurry battled back with an 8-0 run to go back on top. By the end of the half, McM led 28-26.

The War Hawks maintained a slight edge in the third quarter, but eventually extended it to 43-32 with strong defensive play. McMurry never lost the lead again, though the Eagles made it interesting near the end by pulling within one with 2:09 remaining – 51-50.

The rest of McMurry's scoring came on free throws at that point, as juniors Destiny Mathews and Taya Bridges, along with Holland, successfully iced the game. Mathews had a team-high eight rebounds to go with nine points, while Azallee Johnson added eight points.

Ten different players scored for McMurry on Tuesday – nine of which did so in the first half. The defense also strung together a solid effort, limiting Ozarks to just 30.4 percent shooting (17-56).

Ozarks was led by McKenzie Greeson and Kerigan Bradshaw with 11 points, while Judy Forbes added nine points and pulled down an impressive 20 rebounds.

McMurry looks to add a third win on Thursday, Feb. 10 as they travel to LeTourneau. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. in Longview, Texas.
