LONGVIEW, Texas – After back-to-back wins to start the week, the McMurry Women's Basketball team had its momentum subdued by LeTourneau University in a 74-63 road loss Thursday in Longview, Texas.
After picking up its first American Southwest Conference win two nights ago, McMurry (2-18, 1-13 ASC) started strong and led midway through the first quarter. LeTourneau (11-7, 8-5 ASC) then began to pull away with a 10-1 run and steadily kept the lead for good.
The War Hawks never gave up despite a double-digit deficit in the first half, pulling back within four in the third quarter to make it 37-33. The YellowJackets gradually inched away from there, shooting over 50 percent the rest of the way, going 28-55 from the floor. McMurry was not far behind at 40.0 percent, shooting 26-65.
On a positive note, McMurry had four players score in double figures for the third time this season, led by freshman Emily Holland with 13 points and 3-7 shooting behind the arc. Holland also had Irish-style luck with four rebounds, four steals and four assists while also staying available with four personal fouls.
Sophomore Vanessa Wharton added 12 points, while juniors Sidney McHenry and Valery Alvarado chipped in 10 points. Both McHenry and Alvarado made five baskets and shot at least 50.0 percent.
LETU was led by senior Keauna Whitfield with 24 points.
McMurry will complete its final road swing of the season on Saturday, Feb. 12 at UT Dallas at 1 p.m.
