KERRVILLE, Texas – McMurry Women's Tennis claimed a split decision on the road, defeating Texas Lutheran 5-2 in the early morning window in Seguin, while falling 7-0 to Schreiner Sunday night in Kerrville.
McMurry (3-4) claimed a pair of doubles matchups and three singles in a non-traditional pony play format against the Bulldogs (1-5).
"We started the morning off with a good win over TLU," says head coach
Chris Breaux. "Unfortunately, the bus ride over to Kerrville did not do us justice as we fell to a very competitive Schreiner team."
In a non-traditional round of doubles play, the War Hawks capitalized at Flight 1 and 2 doubles against TLU. Junior
Hope Turner and sophomore
Hannah DeFriend fought their way to an 8-6 win over Elaina Brancaleon and Paula Acosta.
Freshman
Kaylin Parker and sophomore
Bridgette Fly found the winning column as well, taking down Kaitlyn Enloe and Haley Hoffman, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.
Fly and Parker would carry their momentum into singles play, as they both captured their singles matches by identical 6-4, 6-3 scores. Fly defeated Enloe at Flight 3, while Parker beat Hoffman at Flight 5.
Freshman
Andrea Smith would add a tally for McMurry with her win over TLU's Kayleigh Gardner, 6-2, 6-4.
Despite the end result, the War Hawks made it tough for the Mountaineers with close calls at Flight 3 doubles and Flight 2 singles. Smith and
Emily Nuttall pushed their doubles matchup to an 8-6 decision, while DeFriend would reach a tiebreaker in the first set of her singles match against Victoria Morales.
The War Hawks will host UT Dallas on Saturday, March 5 inside the Seidel-Swagerty Tennis Center. Match play will begin at 2 p.m.
