Box Score BROWNWOOD, TEXAS – Three touchdown drives in the final seven and a half minutes Saturday, Oct. 8, saw McMurry University nearly rally back from an early 23-0 deficit.
After the host Yellow Jackets went to their vaunted aerial attack for three successive scores in the second and third periods, head coach
Jordan Neal's squad buckled down inside Gordon Wood Stadium. Junior quarterback Drew Wyble (Humble, Texas) ran for one touchdown and threw another to cut the margin to 23-12 with 3:10 to go.
HPU managed to stem the tide just enough for a fourth touchdown toss that turned out to be the deciding factor, with just over a minute to play. Sophomore running back
Drew Hagler (Anson, Texas) bowled into the end zone as the clock ran to zeroes to finish the 30-18 American Southwest Conference battle.
Wyble's 200-yard-plus total offense afternoon led the War Hawks' attack. Hagler, just a week removed from a 100-yards-plus effort against Hardin-Simmons, rushed for 51 yards on 15 carries. Junior wide receiver
Kristopher Martin (El Paso, Texas) was also a highlight offensively, with 44 yards rushing and 42 yards receiving.
Sophomore linebacker
Herman Lee (Prosper, Texas) and senior defensive back
Ke'Shaun Jnofinn (Baytown, Texas) sparked a defense that limited the hosts to their lowest single-game point total and one of their lowest amounts of total yards to date. Lee picked off Yellow Jackets quarterback Landon McKinney twice, and Jnofinn recovered a fumble to aid in a three-takeaway day.
McMurry (0-6 overall, 0-4 ASC) wraps up back-to-back road trips Saturday, Oct. 15. They travel to Austin College for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
