ALPINE, TEXAS – Sophomore quarterback Andrew McBride (Katy, Texas) hit the 200-yard aerial mark for the third time this season, guiding McMurry University in an American Southwestern Conference road trip Saturday, Oct. 29.
McBride hit on 18 of 33 attempts at Jackson Field. His 200-yard outing included a pair of scoring strikes. He found senior wideout
Jermond Lovely for a 47-yard touchdown toss to counteract the host Lobos of Sul Ross State University hitting paydirt on their second offensive possession. Sophomore wide receiver Kyle Canada (Breckenridge, Texas) was his second scoring target, finding him from 34 yards for six to give head coach
Jordan Neal's War Hawks a 27-26 lead late in the third quarter.
The game was a back-and-forth affair for a good share of a cool late October afternoon in southwestern Texas. McMurry, seeking a second victory in their last three contests, led 14-7 in the second frame after sophomore running back Drew Hagler (Anson, Texas) scooted in from a yard out. McMurry continued to hold the advantage until the Lobos posted two of the final three scoring drives, including a touchdown pass with 28 seconds left to lift the home team to a 33-27 decision.
The War Hawks did move the ball into Sul Ross State territory on their final attempt in the last 30 seconds. However, the final seconds ticked off with the ball sitting 40 yards away from a potential game-winning score.
Lovely's touchdown catch was part of a two-reception, 60-yard afternoon that led the War Hawks receivers. McBride did share the wealth finding nine different options. On the defensive side of the ball, it was more sparkling play from sophomore linebacker Herman Lee (Prosper, Texas). Lee compiled ten tackles, with three occurring for Lobo losses and one sack. The War Hawks did manage a pair of takeaways with a fumble recovery by senior defensive back
Ke'Shaun Jnofinn (Baytown, Texas) and an interception by junior defensive back
Hayden DeJean (Pearl River, La.).
Neal's squad moves into its bye week. They wrap up the 2022 season by traveling to Belton, Texas, to take on Mary-Hardin-Baylor Saturday, Nov. 12.
