Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's soccer edged by Austin College, 3-2

SHERMAN, Texas – A second half surge by the War Hawks not enough in the final minutes, as McMurry University fell to Austin College in a heart-breaking 3-2 loss Tuesday night in Sherman, Texas.

The War Hawks are now 2-5 and look to enter conference play this Saturday with positive momentum on their side.

The match proved to be an even pairing as the two would battle back and forth in shot attempts from the first whistle blow. McMurry fired six shots to the 'Roos seven in the first half but fell just short of a score as AC would net one first in the 20th minute.

The score would remain at the 1-0 mark through halftime but would quickly be challenged at the start of the second half as the 'Roos would net another in the 49th minute.

Not backing down, the War Hawks would begin to chip at the deficit starting with a shot to the inside right post by Griffin Gayler off an Andrew Briseno assist in the 51st minute.

Continuing the offensive attack, McMurry would even the playing field with a scoring header by Kevin Serrano off a Joel Sandoval-Pina connection in the 59th minute.

Match play would remain neck-and-neck until the 66th minute when the 'Roos would put one in to take a 3-2 lead. The goal would later stand as the game winner.

In a last-ditch effort to push the contest the distance, McMurry recorded five additional shots after the final AC goal, including two headers by Dylan Caudle and a shot on goal by Andres Martinez in the 89th minute. Despite the offensive aggression, McMurry would run out of time as the match came to an end.

The War Hawks finished with 13 shots with seven on target, while the 'Roos recorded 18 and eight respectively.

Serrano and Caudle paced the War Hawk offense with three shots apiece, followed by Sandoval-Pina and Martinez registering two each.

Splitting time at goalie, Orion Patterson and Angel Salazar matched the 'Roos save total with five.

McMurry looks ahead to its first conference match of the season, traveling to Jackson, Mississippi on Sept. 25 to face Belhaven University. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
