ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University had a number of reasons to celebrate on Sunday afternoon, as the women's soccer team earned a memorable 5-0 shutout victory over Texas A&M – San Antonio at Wilford Moore Stadium.
Nine War Hawks were honored after the win on senior day. All nine seniors started the match and five of the nine either scored or assisted on a goal in the win.
Additionally, McMurry head coach Charles Nobles accomplished a career milestone. With today's win, he became the first coach to reach 27 wins over his career – doing so early into his fifth year.
"This (achievement) is because of every single player I have had the honor to coach," Nobles said in a social media post. "(The players) won those games and let me tag along for the ride."
The War Hawks wasted no time going to work with nine veterans and two rookies on the field, as senior Meriah Sikora found fellow senior Abril Aguayo on a corner kick. Aguayo pushed it past the goalkeeper for a goal in just the third minute.
McMurry would add another early goal in the 15th minute, as senior Bri Caudle found the net unassisted. Today's goal was her first since 2019 after missing the 2020 season.
From there, the War Hawks would never look back. A pair of quick second half goals from Ashland Hansen and McKenna Sandifer put the game out of reach, then freshman Kacy Duren earned her first collegiate goal in the final 10:00 to seal the win. Ashland and Tagan Hansen each had an assist in the second half, as well as Kara Moore.
Defensively, McMurry did not allow a single shot. Senior Brianna Monroe played almost all 90 minutes, but was subbed out near the end for Ashland Hansen. Monroe led the team with 82 minutes in the shutout.
McMurry finished with 22 shots and 12 on target. McMurry also took eight corner kicks without allowing any on defense.
