Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Second half surge propels Pirates past War Hawks, 3-0

ABILENE, Texas – It was a tale of two halves in the season opener for McMurry University Men's Soccer, as the Southwestern Pirates scored three late goals to win 3-0 in Georgetown, Texas on Wednesday.

The War Hawks (0-1) opened the season with a stout defensive effort, holding Southwestern (1-0) to just three shots and one shot on target in the first half. Likewise, McMurry took two shots with one on goal in the opening frame.

The second half is where the home-standing Pirates would flex their muscle, taking 11 second half shots to score three goals. The go-ahead goal came in the 47th minute, followed by one in the 69th minute and 83rd minute.

Despite an early challenge from McMurry, the Pirates extended an impressive undefeated streak to nine games after finishing 4-0-4 this past spring.

McMurry finished with five shots on the day, while winning the corner kick battle at a 3-2 margin.

Six players went the distance for the War Hawks, including senior Andres Martinez that had a shot on goal early in the contest.

Junior Luis Lopez, sophomore Santiago Nunez and freshmen Dylan Caudle and Griffin Gayler also registered a shot in the season opener.

Goalkeeper Angel Salazar played all 90 minutes and recorded three saves in net.

McMurry will look for its first win elsewhere this weekend, as the team travels to the University of St. Thomas (Texas) on Saturday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
