McMurry powers past LETU in ASC quarterfinal, 5-3

DALLAS – McMurry Men's Tennis pushed past a competitive LeTourneau squad, earning the quarterfinal matchup by a score of 5-3 Thursday morning in Dallas.

The War Hawks claimed two doubles and three singles to earn the win.

McMurry led the day off with a win at No. 2 doubles by Reid Smith and Trey Fambrough. The pair earned the point after posting an 8-3 margin against LETU's Rodrigo Vazquez and Alex Barrero.

Powerhouse doubles partners Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell followed shortly after with another win at No. 1 doubles, earning point two for McMurry by a score of 8-4 against Julian Lee and Patrick Baney.

Despite the loss at No. 3 doubles, Dylan Bryant and Chris Causer put up a good fight in a tight race to the end, ultimately dropping the match, 8-6, to Jonah McGinty and Miles Grubbs.

Up 2-1 heading into singles play, the War Hawks looked to keep applying pressure, but LeTourneau claimed No. 3 singles against Smith, 6-0, 6-2 to even things back up.

With the game deadlocked at 2-2, Martinez would make his way to the finish line with a win at No. 1 singles, claiming the point, 6-4, 6-1 to give McMurry the edge.

With the last four singles in the balance, LETU would claim its third point and tie the match once more with a win over Fambrough at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2.

Pushing McMurry past the YellowJackets was Causer at No. 5 singles. Causer topped Barrero in a three-set battle, earning the win by a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 decision.

The War Hawks needed one more point to clinch the win and got it from the No. 2 singles spot. Daniell's three-set performance was a picture-perfect finish as he would drop set one, 3-6, before battling back two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the win. With the match in hand, No. 4 singles ended unfinished with Connor Hogan tied at 6-4, 2-6, 1-1 in a three-set battle.

McMurry will face Hardin-Simmons in the semifinals tomorrow, April 30 at the UT Dallas Tennis Courts in Richardson, Texas. First serve is set for 10:30 a.m.
