ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Tennis jump started the day with a celebration of its seniors before competing against crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons in a tough American Southwest Conference matchup on Friday afternoon at the Streich Tennis Center.
The War Hawks fell to the Cowgirls, 7-2, and move to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the ASC West. HSU improves to 6-6, 4-0.
"Not the outcome we wanted, but we learned a lot," said head coach
Chris Breaux. "I've got a great group of seniors that have shown a lot of grit and determination to help lead this team through a tough year."
Prior to match play, McMurry honored seniors
Katelyn Boster-Duke,
Gabrielle Ellwanger,
Claire Hillyer and
Morgan Parnell with a special ceremony.
HSU won the match by earning a clean sweep in doubles play and four singles matchups.
Reigning ASC West Player Of The Week
Claire Hillyer would continue her win streak at No. 1 singles as she would claim the match by a score of 6-3, 6-1.
Sophomore
Hope Turner earned McMurry's second point at No. 5 singles after going the distance in a three-set battle against HSU's Taja Lawrence, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.
McMurry will have a quick turn around as it will face NCAA Division I foe Abilene Christian in a non-conference matchup tomorrow, April 17 at the Eager Tennis Center. Match play is set to begin at noon. The War Hawks last faced the Wildcats back in March of 2016 where ACU earned the match in a sweep.
