Baseball comeback bid falls short in loss to No. 1 Trinity

ABILENE, Texas -- McMurry University Baseball attempted a late inning rally, but ultimately fell short by a final of 10-5 to the top-ranked Trinity University Texas Tigers on Tuesday night at Walt Driggers Field.

McMurry (0-9, 0-6 American Southwest Conference) totaled seven hits on the day and threw five pitchers at the Tigers' offense.

Trinity jumped out to a quick lead, scoring four runs in the first inning off a grand slam by Jack Vonderhaar.

The Tigers would tally an additional two runs in the top of the second, before the War Hawks began gaining some ground. A shot through the right-side by senior Jonah Bailey would bring in Ryan Potter and Marty Carnahan for a two-run single at the bottom of the second inning.

Trinity continued to tack on points throughout the contest, scoring two more runs in the fourth followed by solo runs in the fifth and the eight.

In the bottom of the ninth, the War Hawks set their sights on a possible comeback, quickly putting two runners on base with only one out. Sam Hillyer would score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Potter. Bailey would rise to the occasion once more as he would single to left field to bring in Carnahan and Braden Fryer.

The War Hawks would see three cross the plate before Trinity would close out the win.

Up next for McMurry is a non-conference three-game series against Southwestern University beginning March 12 at Walt Driggers Field. Game one of the series is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
