BELTON, Texas – Two American Southwest Conference foes battled to extra time in Belton on Saturday evening, as McMurry University fell 2-1 to Mary Hardin-Baylor in a heart-breaking 2-1 loss.
The final goal came with 2:45 remaining in the first overtime, as a deflection away from the net by freshman Angel Salazar deflected back to UMHB's Ethan Buchanan, who kicked it into the vulnerable net for the golden goal.
Both regulation goals came in the first half, as UMHB (3-0-1, 1-0-1 ASC) tallied a goal from Bode Bleamaster in the 15th minute to strike first.
McMurry (0-4, 0-3 ASC) answered 20 minutes later with true freshman Santiago Nunez scoring his first collegiate goal and the team's first goal of the season, tying things up about a third of the way through.
The Cru took 17 shots with 10 shots on net in regulation, but were kept out of the net most of the night by Salazar with six saves. The War Hawks finished regulation with eight shots and six shots on net. One of those six on-target shots nearly served as the golden goal, as DJ Jaime drilled one right at the keeper midway through the first OT.
Each team took one shot in overtime.
The War Hawks return to Wilford Moore Stadium on Monday at 4 p.m. for a non-conference tilt against Concordia Texas. The game was originally scheduled for Feb. 10 as the season opener.
