ABILENE, Texas – An early lead was not enough for McMurry Women's Basketball inside Kimbrell Arena on Thursday night, as the War Hawks fell to nationally-ranked UT Dallas in American Southwest Conference play, 80-64.
Despite the loss, McMurry junior guard Aubrey Guerra scored a season-high 22 points and finished 7-19 behind the arc. Guerra broke the single game record for three-point attempts with 19, five more than previous record holders Maigen Sawyer and Sarah Doherty.
Guerra also fell just one triple short of the single game record for made three-pointers, which is eight – set by Holly Potts in 2002.
The War Hawks (1-16, 1-12 ASC) took a seven-point lead late in the first quarter and held it through most of the second quarter, but a 7-0 run to end the half gave the No. 9 Comets (12-3, 8-2 ASC) a 40-34 lead at the break.
The Comets – who secured the No. 2 seed in the ASC East Division with the win – maintained a slim cushion in the third quarter and eventually pulled to a double digit lead with 1:18 to go in the quarter. The team was led by senior guard Raenett Hughes with 29 points.
For McMurry, Guerra was not the only player with seven baskets. Sophomore forward Destiny Mathews went 7-16 from the field to add 18 points. She also had a team-high 10 rebounds to complete her 12 career double-double and her third double-double in four games.
Sophomores Taya Bridges and Valery Alvarado each had eight points.
McMurry closes the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m. against University of the Ozarks.
