ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore forward Destiny Mathews lit up the scoreboard early and often with a career-high 34 points as McMurry University cruised past University of the Ozarks inside Kimbrell Arena on Saturday, 70-56.
Mathews fell just eight point short of the program record, set in 1983 by Mellissa Peacock and in 1992 by Kristi Risinger with 42 points each.
Even more impressively, Mathews scored eight points early in the fourth quarter and was pulled for good with 6:10 go as McMurry had a 17 point lead. She scored all of her points within 29 minutes – averaging over one point per minute – and finished 10-10 from the free throw line.
Adding to her point total, Mathews grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for her 13th career double-double. Mathews finishes the year with a double-double in four of the last five games.
McMurry (2-16, 2-12 American Southwest Conference) ended the season on a high note with a dominant win, leading by as many as 20 points with a 68-48 lead late in the fourth quarter. The Ozarks (1-14, 1-14 ASC) last led with 6:26 to go in the third quarter at 35-34, but from that point on, the War Hawks outscored the Eagles by a 36-21 margin.
Junior Aubrey Guerra was McMurry's second-leading scorer with 11 points and six rebounds, while sophomore Sidney McHenry added eight points. Freshman Erin McNabb had three assists to lead the team.
