ABILENE, Texas – Sophomore Trinity Meador scored a career high 13 points on Saturday night, but solid shooting and a strong defensive effort from Hardin-Simmons upended the War Hawks by an 89-51 final in American Southwest Conference action at Kimbrell Arena.
McMurry (1-15, 1-11) enjoyed an early lead, as sophomore Destiny Mathews scored seven points in the first 4:46 of the contest to claim a 13-4 advantage with 5:14 remaining in the first quarter. HSU (15-3, 10-2) answered with a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to grab their first lead.
The Cowgirls led 20-19 after the first quarter, and with 4:23 remaining in the second quarter, the War Hawks were within 32-30. But from there, HSU embarked on an 11-2 spurt to end the half. The Cowgirls led 43-32 at the break.
Coming out of the locker room, the Cowgirls exploded on a 26-6 run to extend their lead and put the game out of reach. HSU shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter, while McMurry went 3-for-13 for 23 percent. HSU's Hallie Edmondson led five double figure Cowgirl scorers with a game high 15 points. Parris Parmer chipped in with 14.
For McMurry, Valery Alvarado contributed 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. Mathews followed with seven points in only nine minutes of action. As a team, the War Hawks netted six treys – including three from Meador – and tallied seven blocks in the contest. Kylee Smith led McM with three swats.
McMurry will look to rebound on Thursday night, when they host UT Dallas in Kimbrell Arena at 5:30 p.m.
