ABILENE, Texas – Despite 460 days without competition, McMurry University Women's Soccer appeared in midseason shape as it opened the Spring 2021 season with a 3-0 victory over Concordia Texas at Wilford Moore Stadium on a freezing Wednesday evening.
In what also served as the American Southwest Conference opener, the War Hawks (1-0, 1-0) scored three first half goals on nine shots, while holding the Tornados (0-1-1, 0-1-0) shot-less until the second half.
From there, McMurry kept the pressure on and cruised to victory in icy conditions, allowing just three shots the entire night. The War Hawks had nine shots in the contest.
The first score of the season came in the ninth minute from a familiar face, as perennial goal-scorer Sky Reynolds bent an impressive shot from the goal line on the right side of the box. The kick swerved right past the foot of teammate Kara Moore and swished off the left side net for the goal. Junior transfer Hallie Rutherford picked up the assist.
In the 28th minute, junior Tagan Hansen scored for the first time since 2018 with a header in the box. The assist was credited to Emily Fisher, who set up Hansen with a perfectly placed corner in the box.
McMurry extended the lead to 3-0 before the half with a goal in the 37th minute. After Reynolds fired one at the Concordia Texas keeper, the ball would ricochet back to a lurking Rutherford right on her heels, who tapped it through for her first goal as a War Hawk.
Concordia mustered three second half attempts, with just one shot on net. Senior goalkeeper Cindy Villasana recorded the save on the lone shot, playing comfortably behind a stout McMurry defense.
Reynolds led the way with five shot attempts, while Rutherford, Hansen, Moore and Alyssa Daily each added one.
The War Hawks will continue conference play with a match against crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons on Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. This will begin a home-and-home series, starting within the friendly confines of Wilford Moore Stadium.
