BELTON, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor scored three first half goals and McMurry University Men's Soccer was unable to overcome the deficit, falling 5-1 in Belton on Thursday evening in American Southwest Conference play.
The War Hawks (4-11, 2-6 ASC) had the daunting task of facing a team atop the conference standings in its home venue and weren't able to pull the upset. UMHB (10-3, 8-0 ASC) remains undefeated in conference play and undefeated in Belton with a 6-0 home record.
McMurry allowed a corner kick within the first minute, but smothered it and flipped it into a shot opportunity by Santiago Nunez. The shot ended up being saved in the low corner. Last Spring at UMHB, Nunez had the game-tying goal of a 2-1 overtime loss to the Cru and had an early lead on his mind tonight.
Instead, UMHB broke through in the 16th minute before adding two more back-to-back in the 25th and 26th minutes. After another second half goal by the Cru, McMurry put a tally on the scoreboard as Andres Martinez took a pass from Santiago Nunez and scored in the 58th minute.
With 15 minutes to go, freshman Xavier Zanrosso subbed in at goalkeeper and played out the stretch for his first collegiate appearance.
The War Hawks had four shots – all on target. Nunez had two, Martinez had one -- the lone score – and Griffin Gayler also attempted a shot.
McMurry faces another undefeated conference opponent on Saturday, as it travels to Concordia Texas for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff. With their win over Hardin-Simmons tonight, the Tornadoes are 8-3-3 overall and 6-0-2 in conference play, including a 5-0-2 record at home.
