Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s hoops comeback bid falls short at LeTourneau, 62-53

LONGVIEW, Texas – McMurry University Women's Basketball trailed by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter before finding its groove, but it proved to be too late in a 62-53 loss to LeTourneau in Longview, Texas on Saturday.

The late surge started with 7:42 to go in the fourth quarter with a Sidney McHenry lay-up, as the War Hawks trailed 57-34. The YellowJackets went cold in that span, only managing five points through the finish. Meanwhile, McMurry churned out 19 points in a comeback effort.

The War Hawks fall to 0-5 overall and 0-2 in American Southwest Conference play, while LeTourneau moves to 6-1 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 2-0.

Sophomore forward Destiny Mathews proved to be the main source of offense for the fifth consecutive game, tying a game-high with 21 points while adding a team-best seven rebounds.

Four McMurry players finished with at least five rebounds, including Taya Bridges with six rebounds and McHenry and Kylee Smith each with five. Bridges also contributed 13 points.

Sophomore D'Asia White was also clutch in the late going, coming up with 11 points. Freshman guard Claire Headings had six assists to help set up the offense, including a pair of passes to set up late three-point baskets.

McMurry remains on the road for its next two games, facing Howard Payne on Jan. 14 and Sul Ross State on Jan. 16. The ASC home opener is scheduled for Jan. 21 against Concordia Texas at Kimbrell Arena.
