ALPINE, Texas – In a rematch from earlier this season, the McMurry University women's basketball team was unable to overcome an early deficit against conference-foe Sul Ross State, falling 64-52 in Alpine.
The War Hawks (0-6, 0-3) trailed by double-digits in the first quarter at 21-8, but stole momentum right back in the second frame with a 10-0 run. Sophomore Kaitlyn Randall was instrumental in that run, coming off the bench and scoring seven points in a personal 7-0 run. Freshman Aubrey Guerra put McMurry within two possessions with a three-pointer to end the run on an assist from Randall, making it 28-22 right before the break.
McMurry remained within striking distance the rest of the way, but Sul Ross (4-8, 2-1) kept a comfortable-enough lead to ice the game in the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Destiny Mathews continued her six game scoring leader streak with 11 points, while adding five rebounds. Guerra added eight points, while Randall and sophomore Taya Bridges each finished with seven points.
Freshman forward Kylee Smith led the War Hawks in rebounding with seven boards, falling one short of her season high set in the first matchup with the Lobos.
For the first time in over a month, McMurry Women's Basketball will play inside Kimbrell Arena as it continues conference play on Thursday, Jan. 21 against Concordia Texas. Tip-off from Abilene is set for 5:30 p.m.
McMurry University Athletics plans to open the venue at limited capacity with COVID-19 protocols in effect. An announcement with these protocols will be made prior to game day on mcmurrysports.com and on various McMurry Athletics social media platforms.
