Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth quarter comeback falls short at Concordia, 67-61

AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University Women's Basketball found itself trailing 54-36 heading into the fourth quarter against Concordia Texas on Saturday, but began a valiant comeback that proved to be slightly too late in a 67-61 loss at Concordia Fieldhouse.

The War Hawks (0-10, 0-6) did not hang their head at an 18-point deficit, but instead rattled off a 12-0 run in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter and pull within six, 54-48. Staying in striking distance, McMurry used its momentum to make it 65-61 with 37.7 on the clock.

The Tornados (2-2, 2-2) iced the game in the closing moments for it second American Southwest Conference win of the season.

A turning point in the game came around the final media timeout, as junior guard Aubrey Guerra drew her fifth foul and missed the closing moments. Before fouling out, Guerra finished with 14 points, shooting 5-7 from the floor and 4-6 behind the arc. She also added three assists and five rebounds.

Leading the way for McMurry was sophomore Destiny Mathews, who matched her season high with 21 points. She also added seven rebounds – both team highs.

Freshman Claire Headings made an impact on both sides of the court, especially with her fourth quarter defense. Headings finished with 10 points and tied a game-high with five steals. A couple of her steals were converted into quick lay-ups off the press. Headings also led the team with 32:36 minutes of action.

The War Hawks will look to take today's positives into next week's games as they travel to Louisiana College and Belhaven on Feb. 4 and Feb. 5, respectively. Tip-off at LC is set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday, while Friday's game at Belhaven is set for 6 p.m.
