Wharton nets career high in loss at Louisiana College, 75-61

PINEVILLE, La. – McMurry University Women's Basketball had a fourth quarter battle with Louisiana College on Thursday evening, but slipped in the final minutes in a 75-61 loss to the Wildcats in Pineville, La.

The War Hawks (0-11, 0-7) never led in the contest, but came back from a 16 point second quarter deficit to make it a one-point game with 6:18 left in the game, 57-56.  The play that gave McMurry momentum was an and-one by Destiny Mathews while down 57-53.

From there, Louisiana College (3-2, 1-2) would end the game on an 18-5 run and end any threat of a home upset.

Despite the loss, freshman guard Vanessa Wharton had her best career game with 11 points, shooting 3-8 behind the arc. Junior guard Aubrey Guerra matched her season best with a team-high 14 points, making 4-9 shots from downtown.

As a team, McMurry shot 21-58 from the floor (36.2 percent) and had one of its better three point shooting games with a 7-22 showing (31.8 percent). Louisiana College had similar numbers in both departments, but had a distinct advantage at the free throw line, making 25-37. McM went 12-21 at the line.

The other leaders for McMurry were all sophomores, including D'Asia White with 10 points, Destiny Mathews with seven, Valery Alvarado with seven and Taya Bridges with six. Freshman Kylee Smith had a team-best seven rebounds.

The War Hawks have a quick turnaround for their next game, as the team will play tomorrow night at 6 p.m. against Belhaven in Jackson, Miss.
