PINEVILLE, La. – Aiming to avoid a series sweep at Louisiana College on Sunday afternoon, McMurry University Baseball attempted a late inning rally. The War Hawks ultimately fell short by a final of 11-4 in Pineville, La.
Leading 6-2 heading into the seventh inning stretch, Louisiana College (7-7, 4-5 American Southwest Conference) used a five-run inning to pull away. The War Hawks (3-12-1, 1-8) did respond in the eight by loading the bases with nobody out, adding a pair of runs with an RBI single by Javier Rosa.
McM left two stranded in the eighth to kill the rally and could not produce any offense in the ninth.
Despite the loss for McMurry, both teams totaled nine hits on the day. McMurry also played clean defense throughout the contest with zero errors.
Rosa finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs from the eighth inning single. Sophomore Ethan Schmidt moved into the cleanup spot on Sunday and went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI.
McMurry scored its other two runs via an RBI groundout by Christian Oliver in the fourth and an RBI single to left field by Caleb Shaw in the seventh.
The biggest blow to the score came at the end, as LC hitter Keelyn Johnson smashed a bases-loaded double to clear the bases. That hit would come in his lone at-bat, as he drew three walks and lined a sacrifice fly.
