ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Baseball knocked out 10 hits Tuesday in a nonconference matchup at Walt Driggers Field, but fell to Wayland Baptist University, 12-6.
Junior first baseman Sam Hillyer clubbed a two-run homer to left center in the bottom of the third to bring the War Hawks (3-13-1) with a run at 5-4, but the Pioneers (22-7) answered with three runs in the top half of the fourth.
Earlier in the frame, McM tallied single runs on a sacrifice fly by freshman shortstop Cole Riser and an RBI single by junior outfielder Marty Carnahan.
Junior right-hander Matthew Bass started on the mound for McM, as the War Hawks used numerous pitchers for one-to-two innings apiece. Bass took the loss allowing one unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in one inning.
Freshman Logan E hr, Hillyer and junior Ryan Potter each had at least one scoreless frame on the mound.
McMurry added a run in the fifth on a sac fly by sophomore third baseman Ethan Schmidt to pull back within 8-5.
The War Hawks missed out on a big inning in the seventh, as two outs were made on the base paths. The first three batters all singled, and McM settled for one run when Riser scored on a Pioneer error.
McM's top three in the lineup accounted for seven of the 10 hits, with Hillyer going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBIs. Riser finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI, as well, and Carnahan led McM with three hits, two runs and an RBI.
Junior second baseman Javier Rosa went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
McMurry next travels to LeTourneau for a nonconference series with the YellowJackets. The teams will play a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 4 p.m. and a single game Friday at noon.
