Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's Tennis splits first day in Orlando

ORLANDO – McMurry University Men's Tennis split its first two matches in Orlando Monday, defeating Curry College 9-0 before falling to Aquinas College, 5-2, Monday night at the USTA National Campus.

Against a shorthanded Curry College, who only had four players, two singles matches and one doubles match were won by default by McM.

McMurry made quick work in doubles play, with Carlos Martinez and Chase Daniell winning 8-1 at number one. At number two, Chris Causer and Trey Fambrough won by an identical 8-1 margin.

Daniell and Martinez sat out singles play, allowing others to move up in the lineup. Zach Miller claimed a 6-2, 6-1 win at number one, while Reid Smith blanked his opponent with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number two.

Both Joseph Diaz and Brynson Harmon won 6-0, 6-1 decisions at numbers three and four, respectively.

In the nightcap against the Saints, Martinez won at number one singles 6-2, 6-2 for McM's first point of the match. The second point came at number six singles from junior Try Fambrough, who picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Two other singles matches went three sets, but both were won by the Saints to swing the score their direction.

At number three singles, senior Zach Miller dropped a hard-fought match 6-4, 4-6, 5-10, while freshman Reid Smith suffered the same luck at number four. Smith also won set one, 7-5, but dropped sets two and three, 3-6 and 8-10.

Aquinas scored the doubles point by taking two out of three, with one match needing a tiebreak. Martinez and Daniell won 6-1 at number one, while Diaz and Smith came up just short, 7-6 (6).

McMurry closes its trip with a 6 p.m. matchup tonight against the College of St. Scholastica.
