Box Score ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Baseball played its first midweek game of the season on Tuesday, slipping away in the late innings to fall 10-3 against Austin College at Walt Driggers Field.
Back-to-back homers from Zack Mahoney gave Austin College (4-1) a three-run lead heading into the fourth inning, but McMurry (2-7-1) answered with two runs to make it a 4-3 game. The Kangaroos went on to add pairs of runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings for the win.
Despite the loss, the War Hawks had eight hits, three of which came from freshman Mitch Carnahan. Carnahan, who started the game at catcher and later moved around in the outfield, went 3-for-4 with three singles and a stolen base.
Sophomore Ethan Schmidt got the start at third base, batting 1-for-2 with a sacrifice fly to score McMurry's first run of the game and tie the game at 1-1 in the second frame. Schmidt also stole a base and later scored in the fourth inning.
Sophomore Trent Lee and freshman Chase Stearns each had RBI singles in the fourth inning, helping McMurry pull within a run at 4-3. Back to the top of the order with the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, the 'Roos forced a deep flyout to end the threat.
Junior Marty Carnahan scored McMurry's other run, singling in the fourth inning. He stole two bases in the contest, improving to seven stolen bases on the season.

The War Hawks continue their five-game home stand on Friday, Feb. 28 as they host UT Dallas. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. The following afternoon, McMurry and UTD will face off in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
