ABILENE, Texas – McMurry Women's Basketball played a tight first half, but the No. 16 Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders surged past the War Hawks in the second half for a 74-59 win on Thursday night inside Kimbrell Arena.
McMurry (9-9, 2-7 American Southwest Conference) drops to .500 for the first time this season with the loss. Meanwhile, UMHB remains atop the ASC West with a 15-3 overall record and 8-1 ASC record.
The War Hawks jumped out to an early 13-11 lead at the first media timeout and managed a 19-19 draw at the end of the first quarter. Trailing 35-30 at the half, McMurry would be unable to keep pace as UMHB led by 11 points after three quarters and went on an 8-1 run to pad the lead.
Playing without multiple contributors, including the team's leading scorer Skyler Reyna, senior Sarah Doherty attempted to pick up the load en route to a 17 point night. Doherty went 5-9 from the floor, 3-5 behind the arc and a perfect 4-4 at the free throw line. She was one point shy of a season high.
Freshman Abrelle Godfrey led the post with a career game, scoring 14 points and six rebounds. Her point total marked a new career high, while her rebounds matched her personal best.
Fellow freshman post Destiny Mathews grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and finished with five points. Freshman guard D'Asia White added seven points and three assists.
McMurry's next game is against Concordia Texas on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. inside Kimbrell Arena. Following the game, McMurry Athletics will celebrate its newest Hall of Honor class with a special post-game ceremony.
