AUSTIN, Texas – McMurry University Men's Basketball was unable to overcome a multitude of turnovers Thursday night, as the War Hawks fell on the road 98-76 at Concordia University Texas in the Concordia Fieldhouse.
The War Hawks (6-9, 3-3 ASC) turned the ball over 27 times, struggling with the full court press applied by the Tornados (6-9, 1-5 ASC). Concordia turned that into a 41-23 advantage in points off turnovers.
McM also had early foul trouble, forcing the War Hawks to go to the bench sooner than expected.
Concordia built up a 27-11 lead through the first 10 minutes, but the War Hawks went on a 15-4 run over the next two and a half minutes to pull within 31-26.
Freshman guard Cody LeBlanc led the surge, connecting on three triples and making a pair of free throws. He scored 14 points in the first half and finished with 16, with four made threes.
However, Concordia went on a 17-3 run over five minutes to extend the lead back to double figures. McM was then forced to play catch up in the second half, but never got back within single digits.
Senior guard Zacc Carter led the War Hawks with 17 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-for-8 from the floor. Carter eclipsed 900 points for his career. He gave McM its only lead of the game at 3-2 after knocking down an early three.
Limited in the first half, senior forward Mike Williams Jr. joined LeBlanc and Carter in double figures with 12 points while adding five boards.
Concordia also held significant advantages in bench points and points in the paint and shot 600.7 percent from the field compared to 42.6 percent for the War Hawks.
McMurry will aim for a similar result as last season Saturday when the War Hawks travel to Mary Hardin-Baylor for a 3 p.m. tipoff. McM defeated UMHB 75-72 in 2019 after a defeat to Concordia in the first half of the conference doubleheader.
