War Hawks and Bulldogs battle to 1-1 tie

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Women's Soccer played to its second draw of the year on a hot Saturday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium, as the War Hawks and visiting Texas Lutheran Bulldogs each finished with a goal apiece.

Due to the heat, the teams did not play the overtime periods.

Neither team scored in the first half, with the War Hawks (2-0-2) in control for most of the first 45 minutes with a 54-46 edge in possession and outshooting the Bulldogs (2-0-1), 8-3. Five of McMurry's shots were on goal.

The War Hawks would go on to strike first in the second half, as junior forward Courtney Kendrick found the back of the net in the 67th minute on a pass from sophomore midfielder Ashland Hansen.

Just minutes later, the Bulldogs tied the match at 1-1, proving to be the final tally of the match.

Freshman forward Alyssa Daily had numerous opportunities at the back of the net, leading the War Hawks with seven shots, with four on target.

Overall, McMurry outshot Texas Lutheran, 23-7, racking up 15 more shots in the second half. Ten of the 23 shots were on target.

The War Hawk defense held the Bulldogs without a corner kick on the afternoon, while the offense was able to produce three opportunities of their own.

In goal, junior Cindy Villasana had a blank sheet in the first half with two saves. Senior Jordan Gregory replaced Villasana in net for the second half, allowing one goal and collecting a pair of saves.

McMurry completes its four-game homestand September 13 by hosting Texas College as part of a doubleheader with men's soccer. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
