Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

First half attack leads men’s soccer past Schreiner, 3-0

ABILENE, Texas – The McMurry men's soccer team jumped to a strong start, nailing two goals in the first 10 minutes of their home opener to down the Schreiner Mountaineers, 3-0, on Friday afternoon at Wilford Moore Stadium.

With help from a tremendous defensive display, junior goalkeeper Aidan Keane made his presence felt against a stingy Schreiner attack. Keane recorded his first clean sheet of the campaign with six saves.

Offensively, McMurry (2-1) proved efficient with nine shots and five shots on goal. The War Hawks also scored three times on just four shots in the first half alone. Schreiner (0-2-1) finished with 14 shots and six on target.

In only the fourth minute of action, senior midfielder Miguel Esteban Jr. used a one-time touch with his left foot to bury the opening score. Passes from sophomore Andres Martinez and senior Jesus Sanchez set up the speedy striker for the score.

Sanchez wasn't finished leaving his mark on the game, as the El Paso native squared up on one about 15 feet from the middle of the net and rolled it off the tip of the keeper's glove for the score. Senior forward Javi Mejia was credited with his first of two assists on the day following a cross.

The final goal came in the 28th minute from freshman midfielder Sebastian Hernandez, who scored on his first career shot attempt as a War Hawk. Mejia picked up the assist for his second double-assist game of the season.

McMurry returns to its home turf for the second day in a row on Saturday, Sept. 7, hosting Texas Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.
