Volleyball falls in ASC Crossover finale

LONGVIEW, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball dropped its final game of the American Southwest Conference Crossover Saturday afternoon, falling 20-25, 23-25, 25-18, 18-25 to UT Dallas in a neutral site contest.

The teams traded runs throughout the second set, and McMurry led 17-12 halfway through. However, the Comets quickly tied it at 17. The War Hawks scored the next four points, but UTD scored six of seven to take a 23-22 lead.

A kill from sophomore right side hitter Tyler Richardson briefly tied the set at 23, but the Comets closed out the set on a pair of McMurry attack errors.

The War Hawks controlled the third set, and used a late 5-0 spurt to get within set point. After UTD scored twice, McM closed out the set on a Comet service error to force a fourth set. McMurry never led in the fourth, as UTD claimed the win.

In the third set win, the War Hawks hit a blistering .522. In the three other sets, the War Hawks never hit above .100. Defensively, they held UTD to .000 in the third set win.

The block was once again effective for McMurry as they posted 12 blocks to just three for the Comets. Four players had solo blocks, while middle blockers Kianni Mitchell and Megan Martinez and right side hitter Jada Cortez each had three assisted blocks.

No War Hawk reached double figure kills, as senior outside hitter Jordyn Burnell led the War Hawks with nine. Martinez added eight and senior right side hitter Justice McGowan totaled seven. Both Cortez and Mitchell had six.

Freshman libero Adile Leal led the War Hawks in digs with 22. Burnell added 12 digs. Junior setters Lauryn Davis and Brynn Warnack combined for 30 assists, with 16 from Davis.

The War Hawks remain on the road for a Tuesday night ASC matchup at Howard Payne. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
