Attack leads War Hawks to sweep of Yellow Jackets

BROWNWOOD, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball used a strong attack to sweep Howard Payne University on the road, taking the three sets from the Yellow Jackets, 25-19, 25-10, 25-17, in an American Southwest Conference matchup.

The War Hawks (11-6, 2-4 ASC) trailed early in the first set, 6-2, but went on a 9-3 run to take an 11-9 lead. The only other times McM trailed were 1-0 and 11-10 in the third set.

Five different players had two kills in set one for McMurry. Senior right side hitter Justice McGowan led the War Hawks in kills on the evening with 10. Freshman middle blocker Alexis Garcia finished second on the team with six.

To open the second set, the War Hawks scored the first nine points. After two quick HPU points, the War Hawks scored the next five. McGowan and freshman right side hitter Sharanda Anderson each tallied three kills, while Garcia added two.

Up 10-3 in the third set, Howard Payne went on an 8-0 run to grab the aforementioned 11-10 advantage. However, McMurry returned the favor with an 11-3 run of its own, and closed the match with the assistance of three Yellow Jacket errors.

As a team, the War Hawks hit .293, and held the Yellow Jackets to .088. McM hit .400 in the second set.

McMurry emptied its bench in the contest, with every player recording at least one statistic.

Junior setter Lauryn Davis led the War Hawks with 18 assists, and led in digs with seven as well, as no War Hawk registered double figure digs. Senior outside hitter Jordyn Burnell and freshman libero Adile Leal each totaled six digs, respectively.

Three players recorded two aces apiece, as the War Hawks finished with nine.

McMurry remains on the road this weekend, as it visits Sul Ross State University Saturday at 2 p.m.
