ALPINE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball posted its second consecutive American Southwest Conference road sweep, defeating Sul Ross State University 25-17, 25-20, 25-23, Saturday afternoon.
The War Hawks raced out to a 6-0 lead in set one, and never looked back against the Lobos. Throughout the set, McM had three runs of at least four consecutive points. Seniors Justice McGowan and Jordyn Burnell each had three kills in the set, as the Lobos committed 10 attack errors in the period to hit -.053 in the set.
Burnell and McGowan led the War Hawks with 11 and nine kills, respectively. Burnell also finished with a double-double by recording 11 digs.
Set two went back and forth, as the teams were tied at 17. But McMurry used two 3-0 runs to get within set point, before closing it out three points later. The Lobos had errors on five of the six McM points, including one block by Burnell and middle blocker Megan Martinez.
McM fell behind 13-9 in the third set after a 5-0 Sul Ross run, but slowly chipped away to tie it at 22. Sul Ross scored the next point, but the War Hawks forced two more Lobo errors and put the match way with a Burnell kill.
Two other War Hawks tallied double-digit digs, as freshmen Adile Leal and Chloe Mayfield had 18 and 10, respectively, to hold the Lobos to just a .049 attack percentage for the match.
At the net, McMurry totaled eight blocks to six for Sul Ross. Four players recorded a solo block.
Junior setter Lauyn Davis set up the McM offense with 24 assists, and added six digs, as well. Setter Brynn Warnack added 13 assists and five digs.
McM had four aces, two by Martinez.
The War Hawks wrap up their five game road trip Tuesday in a rematch at Hardin-Simmons University. First serve is at 7 p.m.
