War Hawks drop matchup with Cowgirls

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball was held to just a .047 attack percentage in a 16-25, 17-25, 28-26, 15-25 loss at crosstown rival Hardin-Simmons University Tuesday night.

The War Hawks fought off multiple match points in the third set, and topped the Cowgirls with a wild 28-26 finish to extend the match to four sets. McM held a 22-20 lead, but HSU scored the next four points. McMurry scored the next two to even it up, finally scoring three in a row on kills by seniors Justice McGowan and Jordyn Burnell after two potential match points.

McMurry led 15-13 in the second set, but a 9-0 run gave the Cowgirls a 22-15 advantage. Hardin-Simmons never trailed in the first and fourth sets. HSU hit over .300 in their three set wins, while McMurry never topped .120.

Overall, HSU hit .263 to McM's .047.

Burnell and McGowan each led McMurry with 11 kills, with McGowan hitting .375. Freshman Hannah Bowers added six kills.

Setters Lauryn Davis and Brynn Warnack totaled 28 assists, with Davis dishing out 15. Defensively, freshman Adile Leal led the War Hawks with 13 digs, while Burnell had nine.

At the net, freshman middle blocker Alexis Garcia had four assisted blocks to lead McM. Both Burnell and Bowers had three assisted blocks.

The War Hawks have a week off before hosting Schreiner University October 15.
