War Hawks defeat Mountaineers for fourth time

ABILENE, Texas – McMurry University Volleyball claimed its fourth win of the season over Schreiner University Tuesday night, sweeping the Mountaineers 25-20, 25-20, 25-16 in Kimbrell Arena.

Seniors Justice McGowan and Jordyn Burnell led the offensive attack, with each recording double-figure kills. McGowan led the War Hawks with 13 kills on a .44 attack percentage, while Burnell totaled 10 kills. Burnell also recorded a double-double with 10 digs.

McMurry let the Mountaineers hang around in the first two sets, but a pair of 3-0 runs late in set one gave the War Hawks the early lead. Tied at 10 in set two, the War Hawks scored nine of the next 10 points to pull away.

The War Hawks had two aces and two kills apiece from McGowan and freshman middle blocker Alexis Garcia during the run. Schreiner fought back to get within three, but McMurry put the set away by scoring the final two points.

McM saved its best set for last, hitting a blistering .389. Ahead just 9-8, McMurry scored the next eight points on kills by three different players and a pair of blocks. McGowan had five of her kills in the set.

Garcia finished with seven kills, while junior middle blocker Megan Martinez had six kills. Garcia hit .429 and Martinez hit .556. McMurry hit .230 overall.

McMurry had 42 assists on its 46 kills, with 22 by junior setter Brynn Warnack.

At the net, the War Hawks racked up eight blocks on the evening. Garcia led the way with five assisted blocks, with Burnell adding three. McGowan had the lone solo block.

Freshman libero Adile Leal paced the McM back line with 18 digs. Warnack just missed a double-double with nine digs. The back row held the Mountaineers to a .097 attack percentage.

Up next for the War Hawks is the American Southwest Crossover, where McMurry will host three games Friday and Saturday. A total of nine games will be held at Kimbrell Arena.
