Newcomers lead War Hawks over Crusaders

ABILENE, Texas – Freshmen Alexis Garcia and Haven Farney paved the way for McMurry University Volleyball Tuesday night, leading the War Hawks to a sweep (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) of visiting Dallas Christian College in Kimbrell Arena.

Garcia led all players with 11 kills while hitting a blistering .786. She also added four assisted blocks. Entering in the second set, Farney contributed seven kills on a .455 attacking percentage and was second on the team with nine digs.

With the majority of the starters only playing the first set, the reserves were able to shine against the Crusaders. McMurry trailed 6-4 in the second set before the War Hawks scored a dozen consecutive points with Farney serving. Garcia had seven of her kills in the second set, while Farney had four of hers in the third set.

The War Hawks also had runs of 10 straight points in the first set and scored 10 of the first 12 points in the third set.

Overall, the War Hawks hit .418, with a high of .469 in set three. They held the Crusaders to just a .055 attack percentage. McM had a 6-3 advantage in aces and a 6-2 advantage in blocks, as well.

In addition to Garcia and Farney, sophomore right side hitter Tyler Richardson contributed five kills, while three others tallied four.

Junior setters Lauryn Davis and Brynn Warnack combined for 39 assists, with Davis totaling 23. Freshman libero Adile Leal led the War Hawks back line with 14 digs. She also passed out four assists.

American Southwest Conference play is next up for the War Hawks, as they host Mary Hardin-Baylor Friday at 6 p.m. and Concordia-Texas Saturday at noon. The Cru are receiving votes in the latest Top 25 poll.
